What is an NVQ, National Vocational Qualification?

The NVQ is a work based vocational qualification that focuses on the skills and knowledge an individual has to perform to carry out their job efficiently. The learners enrolled on an NVQ course must be able to show their competency in their chosen role or career path.

There are numerous levels of NVQ ranging from Level 1, which focuses on basic work activities, to Level 8 for senior management, fellowships and degree equivalent.

What does NVQ stand for?

NVQ stands for “National Vocational Qualification”. You can become NVQ qualified in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Vocational qualifications in Scotland are called SVQ’s.

What is an NVQ Equivalent to?

NVQ Level 1: Foundation GNVQ, three to four GCSEs at grades D-E, Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC) first certificate.

NVQ Level 2: Four or five GCSEs at grades A*–C, BTEC first diploma.

NVQ Level 3: Two or more A levels, BTEC Ordinary National Diploma (OND), City & Guilds Advanced Craft.

NVQ Level 4: BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND), or City & Guilds Full Technological Certificate / Diploma, SVQ/NVQ level 4, Level 4 vocational awards

NVQ Level 5: Diploma SVQ/NVQ level 5, Level 5 vocational awards, IVQ Advanced Technician Diploma, Undergraduate

NVQ Level 6: For senior managers, Graduateship (GCGI), Associateship (ACGI), Graduate

NVQ Level 7: For senior managers, Membership (MCGI), Master Professional, Diploma, Postgraduate

NVQ Level 8: Fellowship (FCGI)Doctoral

Is an NVQ the same as a degree?

The Level 5 NVQ equivalent is a Higher degree. The level 6 NVQ is equivalent to a Bachelors degree. The level 7 NVQ is equivalent to a Masters degree and post-graduate certificate.

Can you fail a NVQ?

No you can’t fail an NVQ , the learner will either be able to successfully carry out the tasks required or not yet able to do so. You will receive your NVQ qualification when it has been proven that you have the skills and ability to perform your job responsibilities to the designated level required.

How long do NVQ qualifications take to complete?

NVQ’s are designed to be flexible to meet learners and companies criteria. There is no specific time frame in place for learners to complete their NVQ’s.

NVQ Apprenticeships: Is an NVQ an apprenticeship?

The majority of apprenticeships available will normally involve the completion of an NVQ. Intermediate apprentices sometimes work towards an NVQ at Level 2, advanced apprentices work towards an NVQ at Level 3, and higher apprentices focus their efforts on achieving an NVQ Level 4
